{"id":12147,"date":"2021-08-04T15:51:50","date_gmt":"2021-08-04T07:51:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rcps.raimondi.edu.hk\/wordpress\/?page_id=12147"},"modified":"2025-01-03T14:41:17","modified_gmt":"2025-01-03T06:41:17","slug":"english","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/rcps.raimondi.edu.hk\/wordpress\/curriculum\/english\/","title":{"rendered":"English"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Aims<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The English Language Education curriculum strives to achieve the following:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To offer every student the knowledge and tools to master a second language which provides further opportunities for extending their knowledge and gaining insight into the cultures of other people different to their own.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To provide opportunities for personal and intellectual development, opportunities for further studies, and opportunities for any pleasure and work in the English medium.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To help students lay a solid foundation in learning English, encouraging a lifelong investment in learning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To assist students with effective communication of knowledge, ideas, values, attitudes, and experiences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To prepare students for the changing socio-economic demands resulting from advances in information technology, including the interpretation, use and production of materials for pleasure, study and work in the English medium.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To develop students\u2019 abilities to confidently express and articulate their opinions and beliefs through the English language, providing them with the opportunity to converse with native English speakers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The English Language Education curriculum operates with the following ambitions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To promote and encourage a \u201creading to grow\u201d culture in the school.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To improve and develop student\u2019s confidence in their abilities and their competency of the English language.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To provide students with the knowledge to use English as a part of their daily lives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To promote STEM education by offering co-curricular support, employing e-learning and modern teaching methods, and developing materials that spark students\u2019 interest in innovation and technology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To create and nurture a warm and friendly environment, one that ensures students feel they are immersed in a safe and judgment-free atmosphere where they have the freedom to grow and to be able to develop their English skills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To develop students\u2019 higher-order thinking skills and critical thinking, encouraging them to apply, analyse and evaluate knowledge in the English medium.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Unique offerings of the English Department to create a well \u2013 rounded, dynamic and stimulating English learning environment:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Native-speaking English teachers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>English Room and an English reading corner<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>English Fun Days<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Access to a wide variety of English literature<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participation in a range of English events and competitions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Study tours and school outings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extra-curricular materials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>English ambassadors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Competitions and Events<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We offer a wide variety of competitions and events that encourage students to showcase their skills and talents throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Inter-class Creative Writing Competition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The English Department organises an annual Creative Writing Competition for P.4 \u2013 P.6 students to explore their creativity and provide students with a platform to showcase their writing abilities. Pieces are judged on creativity, language skill and penmanship. Students can enjoy having the freedom and the chance to explore their creative side in their English writing. Last year\u2019s theme was \u2018Tales of Integrity\u2019 and encouraged students to reflect upon one of the major concerns of the school year, namely the concept of integrity, and produce a piece of writing demonstrating their own personal take on the theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hong Kong Speech Festival<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year, the school enters the Primary One to Primary Three mixed-voice choral speaking event. The English Choral Speaking Team is trained by our NET teachers and has regular practice throughout the school year. Our school has seen great performance in previous years whilst participating in the Choral speaking event. The English Choral Speaking Team won first prize in their participation category in 2018\/19. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the choral speaking event has been cancelled for the 2022\/2023 school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are encouraged to participate in the English Solo Verse Speaking events individually. The level of ability and confidence in English usage at the school is reflected in the high number of participants each year, as well as the consistent numbers of students winning Champion, First and Second Runner-up Prizes each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Talent Quest<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The school&#8217;s annual Talent Quest, which is sponsored by the Parent-Teacher Association, gives our students an extra opportunity to express their creativity and develop their talents. Due to the pandemic, the Talent Quest has been cancelled for the 2022\/2023 school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>English Ambassadors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to nurture talent and build up confidence in the students, teams of English Ambassadors are selected each term to champion the English learning in the school. However, despite the new approach to the English Day, the event was thoroughly enjoyed by all. \u201cChristmas Spirit\u201d was the theme of the first English Day, which was carried out during the festive season. Activities included Kahoot quizzes based on a variety of videos such as music videos, short stories and advertisements encompassing the festive season, as well as a Zoom scavenger hunt and writing cards of encouragement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second English Day was conducted face to face at school, fortunately. The English day was planned around the school\u2019s major concerns of the 2021\/2022 school year, which was Wisdom, Integrity and Justice. There were game booths, singing and dancing, a Raimondian spelling bee and a board game activity, \u2018Every Step Counts\u2019. The latter gave students the opportunity to play board games they had made based on the theme of Integrity, Justice and Wisdom and all these activities were received with great excitement and a strong willingness by students to participate. corner<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We offer students access to an English room under the supervision of our NETs, where an enjoyable environment is created in which students can be immersed in the English language. Students can enjoy English board games, read English books, learn tongue twisters and poems and practice English conversation in an informal setting. Unfortunately, due to the Pandemic during the 2021\/2022 school year, students were not able to utilize these facilities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Extra-curricular material<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are provided with additional non-compulsory extra-curricular material to enhance their learning. English activity booklets are given to students before vacation with varying themes such as summer, Christmas, and Easter, depending on the relevance of the holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Native-speaking English Teachers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year we have two NET teachers, Ms Annalise and Mr Jared. Their responsibilities range from teaching Oral lessons to P.1 &#8211; P.6, to planning, assisting, and conducting English events with the English Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside the classroom, during class time, our native-speaking English teachers (NETs) help students to improve their speaking, reading and listening skills with well thought-out and prepared activities. These ensure that all learning styles and levels are catered for. Activities include frequent speaking tasks, allowing students the opportunity to interact with our NETs as well as their classmates. Classroom readers afford students the chance to be exposed to English literature of an appropriate level and standard. There are numerous other enjoyable learning activities which are utilized during the NETs\u2019 lessons to encourage an interactive environment where students can be immersed in the English language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside of the classroom, our NETs regularly interact with students, meeting with students before and after school and during recess. My name is Ms. Annalise, and I\u2019m one of two new Native English Teachers to RCPS. I\u2019m so excited to meet you all very soon! Here\u2019s a little bit about me:<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m from Hawaii, a group of small islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I\u2019ve been in Hong Kong for one year now, and I see so many similarities between here and my home. In both I enjoy mountain hikes and sandy beaches, and prefer to spend sunny weekends having picnics or doing yoga in the park with friends.<\/p>\n<p>Besides Hawaii and Hong Kong, I\u2019ve lived in lots of different places, including England, France, and Nepal. I love learning about new cultures and societies!<\/p>\n<p>My best friend is definitely my eight-month-old kitten named Yakult. She is super fluffy and her favorite food is bread. Sometimes when I\u2019m making myself a sandwich, I\u2019ll make a small one for her too. But shh, her vet doesn\u2019t know! It can be our secret&#x1f609;<\/p>\n<p>I am a very creative and academic person; I love exploring new talents and being in the classroom. And I have many interests besides the ones I\u2019ve listed here. I am excited to get to know all of yours!<\/p>\n<p><u>Mr. Jared<\/u><\/p>\n<p>My name is Jared and I am from South Africa. When I was younger, my family took me to visit wild animals and I held a baby lion in my hands. In South Africa there are huge parks where you can see all sorts of different animals but they are not in a cage or separated like at a zoo. They are all walking or running around in one great big area where you can visit, but you must stay in your car because some animals are dangerous. I love animals and my favourite animal is a dog. I grew up with many dogs in my family.<\/p>\n<p>My hobbies include going to the cinema, doing all kinds of challenging puzzles, and swimming. A few years ago, I made a dream come true when I went swimming in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. I also love playing games. My family always used to have a Games Night every week where we played games like Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble. I still have Games Night with family and friends. I enjoy video games too and I used to have a PlayStation but now I just enjoy games on my computer. I also love reading! I try to read a new book every week and enjoy all different kinds of books, from biographies and science books to mysteries and fantasy adventures.<\/p>\n<p>I love travelling and have a special interest in Asia. In addition to Hong Kong, I have also lived in Japan where I learned to speak a little Japanese. I have visited many Asian countries, including Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and the Philippines. I enjoy eating the different types of food in every new country!<\/p>\n<p>I love meeting new people and learning new things. I look forward to meeting all of the students and learning many new things together!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Study Tours and school outings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year, the school arranges a study tour for some students to travel abroad and visit a location of educational and cultural significance. This provides students with a unique opportunity to practise their English communication skills, experience different cultures and gain a sense of responsibility as ambassadors for the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the pandemic, no study tour was arranged for 2021\/22. In the past few years, our students went to Singapore, Taiwan, Australia and different countries. In 2018\/19, our Primary Five students visited New Zealand during the summer. In New Zealand, they explored a number of cultural and historic sights, spent time at a local primary school and enhanced their real-world English communication skills by staying with a local family
